Despite spending most of their lives in the trees, Brushtail Possums often have to come to the ground to cross the roads that fragment their habitat.
As a result, many Brushtails get hit by cars. Being marsupials, joeys are often left alive in the pouch, having been protected from the force of the car by their mothers body. This is one of the most common reasons for possums being brought into care.
